whats wrong with majority rule
Answers
By majority rule or majoritarianism, we mean a belief that only the majority group should rule the country in whichever way it likes without giving importance to the needs, demands and ideals of the minority group.
Majority rule is accepted in a federal democratic country. It does not respect the minority community which is against the policy of power sharing. In every field like that of job and opportunities or education or health etc., they are denied equality and even they are not allowed to participate in the political parties or elections.
An example of the Sri Lankan government can be taken where existed majoritarianism denied equal rights and equal opportunities to the minority groups of that of the Tamils. Ultimately, there was an outburst of the oppression of the minority community in the form of a civil war which took place in 1983 on the 20th of July.
But finally in 2009 when the government executed a law recognizing all the people equal before the eyes of law which ended the majoritarian rule in Sri Lanka and as a result, Sri Lanka also established great progress in the field of education, health and economy and has a better human development index than that of India.
