Because gases have free of molecules in it but in the case of the liquid it have less free space between molecules.

gases are more compressible than liquid because the particles of gases have a large space between them due to very weak force of attraction between them but the intermolecular space of attraction between the particles of liquid is less also the atoms and molecules of gases are much more spread out than solid or liquids. the Kinetic molecular theory explains why gases are more compressible than liquids
