A solar eclipse occurs when the moon gets between Earth and the sun, and the moon casts a shadow over Earth. A solar eclipse can only take place at the phase of new moon, when the moon passes directly between the sun and Earth and its shadows fall upon Earth's surface.

Sometimes when the moon orbits Earth, it moves between the sun and Earth. When this happens, the moon blocks the light of the sun from reaching Earth. This causes an eclipseof the sun, or solar eclipse. During a solar eclipse, the moon casts a shadow onto Earth.

shows all the total solar eclipses occurring in North America from 2001-2050, and it comes to us via eclipse master Fred Espenak. You can see that – after the August 21, 2017 eclipse – the next total eclipse for North America will come on April 8, 2024.
