Given:

When 0.45 Kg of ice at 0°c is mixed with 0.9 Kg of water at 55°C in a container , the resulting temp is 10.0°C .

To find:

Heat of fusion of ice?

Calculation:

Let latent heat of fusion of ice be L :

  • All mass values to be put in grams.

Applying Principle of CALORIMETRY:

 \therefore \: heat \: released \: by \: water = heat \: taken \: up \: by \: ice

 \implies \: (m1)c(\Delta \theta_{1}) = (m2)L + (m2)c(\Delta \theta_{2})

 \implies \: (900) \times 1 \times (55 - 10) = (450)L + (450) \times 1 \times (10 - 0)

 \implies \: (900) \times 1 \times (45) = (450)L + (450) \times 1 \times (10 )

 \implies \:40500= (450)L + 4500

 \implies \:(450)L = 40500 - 4500

 \implies \:(450)L = 36000

 \implies \:L =80 \: Cal/g

So, latent heat of fusion is 80 Cal/gram.
