When 20cm³ of a gaseous hydrocarbos were completely burnt in an excess of oxygen, 60 cm³ of carbon dioxide and 40cm³ of water vapour were formed , all volumes being measured at the same temperature and pressure. What is the formula of hydrocarbons?

Answer:

The said hydrocarbon with a general chemical formula of CxHy completely burns in an environment with excess of oxygen O2 according to this combustion reaction:

CxHy + (x+y/4) O2 → x CO2 +y/2 H2O

So, based on the given information, one can write:

x = 60/20 = 3

y/2 = 40/20 = 2

giving

y = 4

Then, this results in C3H4 as the hydrocarbon in the problem, which from organic chemistry can be one of the below compounds:

Propadiene: H2C=C=CH2

Propyne: CH3—C≡CH

Cyclopropene (with a triangular structure including one double bond).
