3grams of Mg combines with 2grams of Oxygen to for 5grams of MgO(Magnesium Oxide).

In the second , case only 2 grams of the total 5 grams of oxygen will react with 3 grams of Magnesium and the remaining 3 grams of oxygen will remain unreacted.
That is , there will be no change in the mass of MgO(Magnesium Oxide)

This is governed by the Law of definite proportion , which states than in a chemical substance , the elements are present in definite proportions by mass.
