Concept:

Rotational motion of a rigid body:Angular Momentum and Moment of Inertia.

Given:

Body is rotating in a circumference. Linear speed is continuously decreasing.

Find:

Condition for angular momentum.

Answer:

Angular momentum means a mass in rotational motion. It is the quantity corresponding to linear momentum in a rotational motion. Mathematically it can be expressed as,

J = r x p       (Bold letters means vectors)

where J = Angular momentum

          r = Radius

          p = Linear momentum

J = rp sin\theta             --------------  (i)

Now, as linear speed is continuously decreasing, linear momentum will also decrease. (∵ p = mv where m = mass and v = linear speed).

According to equation (i), if linear momentum decreases then angular momentum will also decrease.

Hence, when a body is rotating in a circumference with a lowering linear speed then the condition for angular momentum is that it will increase.
