There are three types of work- positive, negative and zero.

wirk done against frictional force is always negative as displacement and frictional force are in opposite directions i.e making 180 degrees.

and work is the dot product of frictional force and displacement.

hence negative work is done when a body moves against a friction force in horizontal plane.
