If an uncharged capacitor C is connected across the terminals of a battery of potential V then a transient current flows as the capacitor plates get charged.
If the potential difference remains the same and the capacitance decreases, the charge on the plates and the energy stored in the capacitor must also decrease. (Charges return to the battery.)
