Answer:

presuming that the metal slab does not contact either plate… the effect of the metal slab is to create two capacitors in series. Presuming that the metal slab is exactly in the middle of the gap between the two plates AND has an area that covers at least as much as the plates, the two capacitors created will have the same value. Capacitors in series add as their inverses, so the resulting combo capacitor will have HALF of the value of the individual capacitors created:

1/Ctotal = 1/C1 + 1/C2 → Ctotal = C1*C2/(C1+C2) = C*C/(C+C) = C/2

The capacitance of the capacitor increases by introducing the metal plate between the plates of a charged capacitor

  • The electric field between the plates is introduced by introducing the dielectric medium between the plates of a parallel plate capacitor helps the dielectric to get polarized
  • hence the potential difference between the plates of the capacitor decreasesconsequently, the capacitance increases.

If t is the thickness of the metal plate, then the effective separation between plates is decreased from d to (d - t).

Hence, increasing the capacitance.
