Correct Question

  1. A die id thrown once. Find the probability of getting :

(i) an even number

(ii) a multiple of 3

(iii) not a multiple of 3

Solution

When a die is thrown once, the total number of possible outcomes = 6 (1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6)

(i) For an even number :

Number of favourable outcomes = 3 (2, 4 and 6)

   \rm{=> P(getting \: an \: even \: number)=\dfrac{Number \: of \: favourable \: outcomes \: (events)}{Total \: number \: of \: outcomes}}

                                                                    \rm{= \dfrac{3}{6}=\dfrac{1}{2}

(ii) For a multiple of 3 :

 Number of favourable outcomes = 2 (3 and 6)

\rm{=> P \: (getting \: a \: multiple \: of \: 3)=\dfrac{2}{6}=\dfrac{1}{3}}

(iii) For not a multiple of 3 :

 Number of favourable outcomes = 4 (1, 2, 4 and 5)

\rm{=> P(not \: a \: multiple \: of \: 3)=\dfrac{Number \: of \: favourable \: outcomes \: (events)}{Total \: number \: of \: possible \: outcomes}}

                                                    \rm=>\dfrac{4}{6}=\dfrac{2}{3}
