Given : a force is applied on a body of mass 10 kg for a period of 4s the velocity of the body changes from 6 m/s to 8m/s

To Find :

a) what is the initial momentum of the body

b) what is the final momentum of the body

c) what is the change of momentum of the body

d) what is the force applied on the body

e) what is the rate of change of momentum of the body

f) what is the impulse experienced by the body

g) what is the relation between impulse and change in momentum

Solution:

Momentum = mass * velocity

initial momentum of the body = 10 x 6 = 60 kg m/s

final momentum of the body = 10 x 6 = 80 kg m/s

change of momentum of the body  =  final momentum - initial momentum

= 80 - 60 = 20 kg m/s

F = ma

a = (v - u)/t

a = (8 - 6)/4 = 1/2

force applied on the body  = 10 * 1/2 = 5N

or F = rate of change of momentum  = 20/4  = 5N

rate of change of momentum of the body = 20/4  = 5N

impulse experienced by the body = F.t  = mΔv

= 5 * 4 = 20   or 10 * (8 - 6)  = 20 Ns  or  kg m/s

impulse and change in momentum  are same
