When a gas is subjected to adiabatic expansion, why does it gets cooled?

ammonium is the gas.when this gas enter and pressure to enter this gas from small pipe and and at the time we attach this gas in big pipe after it expand and feel freely and it will cool.In refrigerator this process will be done again and again.
