when a glass of water is freezed, formation of ice starts from the top layerbut melting of ice starts from the bottom.Why?

beacause the top is open the cold air is in direct contact therefore it starts freezing from the top first and as the bottom is thick it starts heating faster as air touches the top it starts to melt but as the bottom is more thick it provides more warmth
