When a glass rod is rubbed with silk clothes and brought near a pitched ball, the ball gets attracted because:

  • Charging and charge transfer occur due to induction in the material.
  • On rubbing, electrons are transferred from silk cloth to glass rod and the rod becomes positively charged.
  • When we bring the pitched ball near to the glass rod the side of the pitched ball which is near to the balloon generated the opposite charge i.e negative while the adjacent side induces a positive charge.
  • The near end is oppositely charged to that of a glass rod hence, there will be an attraction.
  • The same charge nearer causes repulsion.
