when the green colour of iron salt known as ferrous sulphate is heated the black substance formed is Fe2O3 and sulphur dioxide and sulphur trioxide along with odour of sulphur is released.

It is a type of decomposition reaction.

The reaction above can be written as :-

2FeSO4 + => Fe2O3 + SO2 + SO3

where is heat supplied to decompose the ferrous sulphate.
