When a hanging carpet is beaten with a stick, the dust particles are removed from it because the carpet on beating suddenly moves forward and the dust particles due to inertia of rest continue to remain at rest. Hence the dust particles fall down and the carpet gets cleaned.
why can dust be removed from a carpet by shaking it,or by beating it with a stick........ Because when we shake a carpet it suddenly comes into motion but the dust particle can't suddenly come into motion so they remain suspended in the air?

Yes I think the dust can also be removed when it is shaked due to dust's inertia.

A body at rest remains at rest & cannot start moving on its on due to the inertia of rest.
Initially, both the carpet and the dust are at rest.
When the carpet is shaken or beaten with a stick, it is set into motion will the dust remain in the state of rest due to inertia of rest.
Thus, dust falls down due to the pull of gravity.
