let x be the wt of metal

wt of metal oxide = 1.4 x

wt of oxygen = 0.4 x

0.4 x g of oxygen combines with x g of metal

8 g of oxygen will combine with 8x/0.4x = 20 g

eq. mass of metal = 20

the metal with eq.mass 20 is Calcium

therefore the metal oxide is CaO
