On dropping the pebble in still water, the B)waves move.

Waves propagation

  • When a pebble or stone hits the surface of a still water body, the kinetic energy of the stone is transferred to the water molecules that come in contact with the pebble.
  • This in turn causes the generation of waves which are a series of crests and troughs. These waves or oscillations spread out in the waterbody to vast distances as more and more water molecules receive kinetic energy and start to vibrate.
  • As they travel longer distances, they die out because of loss of kinetic energy and the water body becomes still again.
