Effect of Visual receptors for sensory damage
Explanation:
- The immediate effect is called bleaching the retina. Those cones where the image of the Sun falls will be depleted of chemicals used for sensing light.
- Apparently depriving cones of their chemicals (color pigments) is toxic.
- Cones cells will die if exposed to bright light for long periods of time because of color pigment deprivation. Damage starts to occur within a half-second. This is a statistical process. Just as you don’t necessarily get cancer from 1 pack of cigarettes or one REM of radiation, the cone cells don’t necessarily die in one half a second.
- There is a lot of evidence to suggest that the body will repair some of the damage to the cones with about a one month half-life, so that after 6 months, nearly 99% of the repair will be complete.
- Typical results are that half of the cones in the affected area are permanently damaged, resulting in about 20/40 vision in the spot where the Sun’s image landed.
