Plant senescence is the process of aging which occurs in due to some stress or due to aging of the plant. Senescence is  a highly regulated process  which occur to maximize the nutrient export.

During senescence the mineral ions and other nutrients are transferred to young parts of the plant such as apical meristems, lateral meristems, developing fruits and seeds and other storage organs by the process of diffusion and active intake by the cells of growing part of the plants.

It is an adaptive advantage for the plant which increases its fitness and reproductive success. Protein which is degraded during the process of senescence releases minerals and nitrogen for mobilization to young part of the plant.
