random variable is a variable whose value is a numerical outcome of a random phenomenon. A discrete random variable X has a countable number of possible values. Example: Let X represent the sum of two dice. To graph the probability distribution of a discrete random variable, construct a probability histogram.

A discrete variable is avariable which can only take a countable number of values. In this example, the number of heads can only take 4 values (0, 1, 2, 3) and so the variable is discrete. The variable is said to berandom if the sum of the probabilities is one.
