Because of newton third law of motion. When a bullet is fired from a gun the force sending the bullet is equal to the force sending the gun backward.

I think you must have read newton's third law of motion To each and every action there is an equal and opposite reaction So the gun recoils when a shot is fired from it in accordance with the newton's third law
