When a sodium atom loses an electron it forms Na' ion. The radius of Na ion is lesser the
Na atom. This is because,
a) The attractive force of nucleus is more in Na ion than Na atom
b) The attractive force of nucleus is more in Na atom than Na ion
c) Number of protons present in Na atom is less than Na ion
d) Number of electrons present in Na ion is more than Na atom

Answer:

a) The Attractive Force of the nucleus is more in Na ion than Na atom.

This is because when A metal gets into a cation, The no electron decreases, So the No Of Proton Remains the Same, because only the electron is gone away, This creates a Charge Variation, Now positive charge wins over the negative charge, No of +ve Charge Is larger since due to more proton. Therefore Like poles of the magnet attracts, The +vely charged Nucleus attracts the Negative Charged Electrons.

The attractive force of nucleus is more in Na ion than Na atom.

Explanation:

  • The sodium is an element of group 1, placed just below lithium with atomic number of 11.
  • It has 11 electrons, last shell having 1 electron
  • The atom loses 1 electron to become a monopositive cation.
  • Now the electron number becomes 10, also a shell is totally lost.
  • So the attraction of nucleus on electron is quite high.
  • This makes the ion smaller than atom.
