Spaceships have enormously high speeds and when they interact with the atmosphere, air resistance(in other words, friction,) is produced in huge amounts which causes it to heat up. That is why a lot of parts of the spaceships are ejected in space itself so that contact area is minimised and not much damage is produced to the spaceship.
