The surface tension of water is affected by various factors such as oxidation, chemical addition and temperatures. When impurities are added to water, they tend to affect its surface tension. When a highly soluble substance like salt is added in water, it tends to increase its surface tension. Adding a sparingly soluble substance in water such as soap or alcohol tends to decrease its surface tension
