This is because of the formation of lactic acid in the muscle cells which forms when there is lack of oxygen in these cells. When a sportsman is running he is not able to breathe properly and there is lack of oxygen in the muscle cells which have to respite in this condition where there is a lack of oxygen thus they give out energy + lactic acid. The build of lactic acid in our muscle cells causes cramps.

Answer:
When the energy gets finished in the muscle, anaerobic respiration starts taking place and glucose is converted to lactic acid with the release of small amount of energy. That's the reason sportsmen get cramps in their leg.
