when a stone is thrown upwards, it reaches up to the some height and then starts falling down because the force of gravity acts downwards.

when the stone reaches the highest point, it momentarily comes to the rest and the velocity becomes zero and then it starts falling downwards under the effect of gravity.

When we throw a stone vertically upwards, gravitational force tries to pull it down and reduces its velocity. Due to this constant downward pull, the velocity becomes zero after a while . The pull continues to be exerted and the stone starts moving vertically downward towards the centre of the earth under its influence.
