When a train is at a distance of 2 km, its engine
sounds a whistle. A man near the straight railway
track hears the whistle directly and by placing his
ear against the track of the train. If two sounds are
heard at an interval 5.6 s, find the speed of sound
in iron (material of the rail track). Given that velocity
of sound in air is 330 ms -1

Answer:

v=s/t

t=s/v

t= 2000/330

t = 6.06

time taken by sound in iron= 6.06-5.6=0.46s

v=s/t

v= 2000/0.46

v=4347.82m/s

speed in iron= 4347.82m/s
