White light is made of seven color band (VIBGYOR), such that the white light is incident on the refracting face of the prism each coloured ray deviates through different angle, depending upon its wavelength.This is called as deviation. The red rays deviate least and the maximum wavelength, whereas the violet rays deviate most and the minimum wavelength. It is this differential deviation of rays, which causes dispersion.

Hence, when a white light ray falls on a prism, the ray at its first surface suffers both both deviation and dispersion.
