When Abraham Lincoln was elected as the President of the United States, he told the South that he did not want to end slavery.
The Republican Party was framing and working on the ideology of anti-slavery. Lincoln considered his primary duty to maintain the Union.
During his speech, Lincoln clarified that he had no plans or aims of ending the practice of slavery in the field and places where it existed or repealing the fugitive slave law. This stance though came as a shock to the African-Americans.
