This reaction is termed as esterification reaction.Ethanoic acid reacts with ethanol in the presence of concentrated sulphuric acid as a catalyst to produce the ester, ethyl ethanoate. The reaction is slow and reversible. To reduce the chances of the reverse reaction happening, the ester is distilled off as soon as it is formed.

Commercial use of esters:

1) To make a substance less water soluble meaning the carboxylic acid is more soluble then its ester.

2) To combine two substances together Eg: Procaine with Penicillin so 1 drug 2 effects

3) To create surfactants Eg: Soap
