When exposed to air many metals will slowly react with oxygen in the atmosphere to form metal oxides and magnesium is one of those metals. Rubbing with sand paper helps to remove this oxide layer due to which burning speeds up

WHEN ALUMINIUM IS IN AIR IT FORM A LAYER OF ITS OXIDE OF 10^-4 TO 10^-6 mm

WHEN IT IS RUBBED THE OXIDE LAYER IS REMOVED

AND IT LOOKS BLACK DUE TO SMUT.

IT DOES NOT REFLECT LIGHT SO WELL.

AS WE KNOW FOR OBJECT TO SEE FIRST REFLECTED LIGHT COME TO OUR EYES
