When ammonium salts are heated with sodium hydroxide, they produce gas ‘A’. With reference to certain properties of gas ‘A’ answer the following questions.
(i) Identify gas ‘A’.
(ii) Write the balanced chemical equation for the above reaction which
produces gas ‘A’.
(iii) How is gas ‘A’ collected and dried?
(iv) What do you observe when gas ‘A’ is brought in contact with concentrated
hydrochloric acid?

Answer:

i) Gas A is Ammonia(NH3)

ii) NH4Cl + NaOH ----> NaCl + NH3 + H2O

iii) Ammonia gas is collected by the downward displacement of air. It is dried by using quicklime (CaO)

iv) Dense white fumes of NH4Cl is observed.
