When an evacuated tube of volume 400 cm is filled with gas at 300 K and 101 kPa, the mass of
the tube increases by 0.65 g.
Assume the gas behaves as an ideal gas.
What could be the identity of the gas?

Answer:

Given:-

Pressure (P)=103kPa≈1atm

Volume of gas (V)=5.37×10−3m3=5.37L

Temperature (T)=60℃=273+60=333K

No of moles of methane (n)=?

now, using ideal gas law,

PV=nRT

1×5.37=n×0.0821×333

⇒n≈0.2 mol

Now,

Molecular mass of methane (M)=16g

Therefore,

Mass of sample of methane =n×M=0.2×16=3.2g
