When an object falls from a height, its height = h decreases, but its acceleration due to gravity = g increases.
Why, then, does its potential energy (mgh) decrease, and not increase?
Because if g increases, then potential energy should also increase.

Answer:
Answer is in the question itself. Height also decreases... So automatically potential energy decreases. Acceleration due to gravity is 9.8 m/s^2 which is a constant. But height increases till the object reaches ground.
