object should be placed 200cm from the pole of mirror to get magnification of 1/3

it is given that,

object distance , u = -100cm

magnification = 1/2

we know magnification = -v/u

⇒1/2 = -v/-100

⇒v = 50cm

let f is focal length of convex mirror.

using mirror formula,

1/v + 1/u = 1/f

⇒1/50 + 1/-100 = 1/f

⇒1/100 = 1/f

⇒f = +100 cm

now, magnification = 1/3

let object distance is u

then, 1/3 =- v/u

⇒v = -u/3

now 1/(-u/3) + 1/u = 1/100 [ from mirror formula .]

⇒ -3/u + 1/u = -2/u = 1/100

⇒u = -200cm
