Answer:

The Third Battle of Panipath was fought on 14 January 1761.

It was fought between the Afghan forces of Ahmad Shah Durrani along with his local Rohilla and other Pathan and Oudh allies, against the Maratha Empire, in which the Marathas were finally defeated.

The Results of the Third Battle of Panipath are given below :

  • There were heavy casualties on both sides.
  • Immediately after the battle, the Afghan army massacred thousands of Maratha soldiers as well as civilians in the streets of Panipat. Even after the battle, around 40,000 Maratha prisoners were slaughtered in cold blood.
  • Sadashivrao Bhau and the Peshwa’s son Vishwasrao were among those killed in battle.  The Peshwa Balaji Bajirao never recovered from the shock this debacle gave.
  • Ahmad Shah Durrani did not remain in India too long. He reinstated Mughal Shah Alam II as the Emperor at Delhi.
