The Third Battle of Panipat took place on 14th January, 1761. It was fought between the Marathas and the Afghans led by Ahmad Shah Abdali.

This Afghan ruler invaded India and captured Punjab and Kashmir provinces, which was recaptured by the Marathas in 1758, by defeating his son Timur Shah Durrani.

But the powerful Marathas were badly defeated in this Battle of Panipat, due to the much larger number of Afghan forces and better trained Afghan artillery.
