Civilization began in 3500 BC on the Tigris River and Euphrates river; the name given to this civilization, Mesopotamia, means that "land between the rivers". The Nile valley in Egypt had been home-grown to agricultural settlements as early as 5500 BC, however the expansion of Egypt as a civilization began around 3100 BC. A 3rd civilization grew up on the Indus River around 2600 BC, in elements of what are currently Republic of India and West Pakistan. The fourth civilization emerged around 1700 BC on the Yellow river in China known as Huang He river civilization.

The valleys in Egypt with small tributaries were the only suitable place for people to settle and begin farming. They learned very early to dig irrigation ditches from the river to help water their crops during the growing season. This would be necessary in just about any country in the Middle East that has such a dry climate.
