The discovery of the annual depletion of ozone above the Antarctic was first announced in a paper by Joe Farman, Brian Gardiner and Jonathan Shanklin which appeared in Nature in May 1985. Later, NASA scientists re-analyzed their satellite data and found that the whole of the Antarctic was affected.

In 1984 British Antatctic Survey scientists
Joseph Farman, Brian Gardinar and Jonathan shanklin discovered a recurring spring time Antarctic ozone hole. Their paper was publish on Nature, May 1985 the study summarized data that had been collected by the British Antarctic Survey showing that ozone level had dropped to 10 percent below normal January levels to Antarticta.
