He was born on 29th August 1905. In 1922 at the age of 16 years he joined the Indian Army. During his stay in Army he took keen interest in the sport and was often seen playing late night after his duty hours.

At the age of 17 he started featuring in hockey tournaments conducted by the army and even played regimental games. He continued playing from the Army tournaments till 1926. His immense skill led to his selection in the Indian Army hockey team  for the tour of New Zealand.  The  Indian Army team won 18 of its matches out of 21 because of his sheer magic.
