The Bombay Spinning Mill was the 'first cotton mill' that was opened on 7th July in the year 1854 in Bombay now Mumbai by 'Cowasji Nanabhai Davar'.
EXPLANATION:
- In the past and prior to the 'middle of the 19th century', India was exporting cotton to the UK and then re-import the textile. In the year 1820 the textile import cost was around INR 350,000. However, these costs rocketed immensely until in the year 1860 wherein textile imports were around INR 19.3 million.
- The drive towards the establishment of a cotton industry came from Indian business persons. Therefore, the 1st Indian cotton mill named The Bombay Spinning Mill was set-up in the year '1854 in Bombay' by 'Cowasji Nanabhai Davar', a Persian businessman during British India.
- The Company was designed by Sir William Fairbairn (a Scottish civil engineer, and shipbuilder, and structural engineer. This mill started manufacturing on 22nd February in the year 1856 under the administration of British expert cotton operatives and engineers. There was disapproval from Lancashire mill owners, however this was eventually offset by the support from British textile machinery manufacturers.
