The Congress faced challenges of political succession second time 1966 after the death of Lai Bahadur Shastri

Explanation:

  • From 1964 to 1966,  Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri  was the prime minister of the country. Shastri's Prime Minister's office unexpectedly ended on 10 January 1966, when he died of a sudden  in Tashkent (then in the USSR and now the capital of Uzbekistan). He was there to talk to Muhammad Ayub Khan, the former Pakistani president, about  signing an agreement to end the fighting.
  • Therefore, the Assembly, for the second time in two years, the Congress had faced  political succession challenge. This time the fight was between Morarji Desai and Indira Gandhi which was serious. Morarji Desai had previously served as Bombay's Chief Minister (Gujarat & Maharashtra) and also in the middle.
  • Jawaharlal Nehru 's daughter Indira Gandhi was formerly president of the Congress and then a Union Information Minister in  Lal Bahadur Shastri's cabinet. The leaders of the party agreed this time to support Indira Gandhi, but the vote was not unanimous. The contest was determined by secret ballot of Congress parliamentarians. By winning support for more than two thirds of the Party's members, Indira Gandhi defeated Morarji Desai. A peaceful power transfer was regarded as a symbol of "maturity of India 's democracy", amid "strong rivalry" for "leadership".
