I believe that it was king Minos. He prayed to Poseidon for a victory over a rival king. It was possibly Athens. Anyway… . The battle was favorable to Minos. Poseidon sent a perfect white bull from out of the ocean which Minos was supposed to sacrifice to Poseidon. Minos became greedy. Me kept Poseidon’s bull, and sacrifice an inferior bull from his own herd. Now… . Poseidon didn't like this, so he made Minos' wife fall in love with the bull. This queen, went to the royal handyman, Dedailous and he built a hollow artificial bull with an opening for the queen to hide herself in. The God sent bull then had relations with the queen. Out of this union was born the Minotaur, a creature with a bulls head on a human body.
Now, Minis couldn't have this creature roaming around and have the scandal known, so he went to Dedailous to build a labyrinth under the palace to conceal the Minotaur. Now at this time, every year, Athens was to send six boys and six girls to Crete to be offered to the Minotaur. (This why I thought it was Athens that Minos defeated) Now… . Dedailous knew the whole ugly truth, and Minos wanted to seal Dedailous’ silence so he had Dedailous and Icarus, Dedailous’ son put in a prison. But ever resourceful… . Dedailous built two pairs of wings. One for himself and one for his son. The wings were made of wax and feathers. When the work was done, and they were readying for their escape, Dedailous said to Icarus… . Don't fly too high, or the heat of the sun would melt his wings. And don't fly too low or the sea spray would make the wings soggy and he wouldn't be able to fly with all the extra weight. Icarus just became overjoyed with the flying and flew to great heights. Just as Dedailous had warned, the sun melted the wax and fell into the ocean and drowned.
The “history” of ancient Greece reads like one long melodrama. This whole story is just a chaper or so of the ongoing mythology of family curses and revenge, betrayal, monsters, and Gods. The storylines roll through generation after generation.
Murder and mayhem. Etc…
Occasionally there is healing.
