When the patient is low on sugar (glucose) or needs energy. For e.g. After an accident or surgery. Or many other conditions.

Answer:

Glucose is given to patients when they are dehydrated. Administration of Glucose orally is generally done to make the patient feel re-hydrated. However, if the patient is not capable of  taking the glucose orally, i.e. when the patient is seriously ill, then glucose drips are are taken to the patients in the form of saline drip. This will help the patient to increase and hence stay hydrated.
