Helen attended the Wright-Humason School for the Deaf in New York City for two years from October 1984 onwards, accompanied by Miss Sullivan. This decision was put forward at a meeting in Chautauqua of the American Association to Promote the Teaching of Speech to the Deaf. This school was chosen for Helen because it was renowned for the highest advantages in vocal culture and training in lip-reading.
