When Ashoka ascended the throne, Kalinga was the only kingdom that was not under

the Mauryan control. Kalinga is the ancient name of coastal Orissa. It was a very

powerful kingdom. Control on this kingdom could certainly give Ashoka a greater

economic prosperity. So, in 261 BC, Ashoka attacked Kalinga and won it after a bitter

struggle. About one and half lakh people were captured. More than one lakh people

were killed. The great destruction , death and human sufferings in the war filled his

heart with sorrow and remorse. He was influenced with Buddhism. He adopted the

policy of winning people over through Dhamma in place of conquering them

through force.
