A hotbed of the Indian Independence movement through the early 20th century, Bengal was partitioned along religious lines. The western part went to India (and was named West Bengal) while the eastern part joined Pakistan as a province called East Bengal (later renamed East Pakistan, giving rise to Bangladesh in 1971).

good question...

at the time of partition, Bengal and Bangladesh was a whole state. but the west side was dominated by Hindus and east Bengal by Muslims. thus when West Bengal acceded to India it was referred as west Bengal.
and east Bengal acceded to Pakistan. but due to far borders and military rule there was a demand for a separate nation. thus the new country Bangladesh ( west Bengal) was formed.
