When organisms are consumed in the foodchain, only energy stored as TISSUE is transferred. Therefore, at each stage of the food chain, less energy and biomass is transferred between organisms than at the previous trophic level.

This quantity is called as gross primary production or gross productivity (Pg). R stands for rate of respiration. When Pg is equal to respiration, there is no change in energy content. When Pg is less than R, biomass decreases, and Pg is greater than R, there is an accumulation of biomass.
